I want to get a pair of winter boots. However I need some that are water proof because there are often giant puddles (about 3" deep) on my campus that I have to go through when it rains a lot. I really like this pair of Sorels so I was wondering if anyone has had any experiance with them. If you have what did you think of them as far as comfort, durability, and warmth (ease of using manual transmission for bonus points)?

Comfy: Yes
Warm: Yes
Water proof: Sort of
Stinky feet: Definitely
Third pedal capable: Sure, but not without some compromise.

Tis is basically true, but you can waterproof these really easy with any number of leather safe waterproofing solutions. The main perk of sorels is that they are very durable and long lasting. Tey are moderatly warm (not as warm as advertised, but warm) and they breath okay, but not like a nylon weave or canvas. Good boots though.

I have a pair. Love them. They handle Chicago winters pretty well. I sprayed the insulating liner with silicone for extra water proofing? Mostly just peace of mind. The only manual transmission car I have won't make it very far in snow, so I can't vouch for that.

Boots and manuals don't really work well unless you have a large pedal box. In my Focus I used to drive in my Gripfasts all the time but the thought of climbing in the Miata with them brings tears to my eyes as I know I won't be able to manipulate the throttle with out hitting the brake.

A nice pair of docs or Gripfasts can work with some nice warm socks, my Gripfasts were waterproof up to the ankle but now I've worn the leather through in the parts where the boot flexes. Buy the nicest pair of boots you can and take care of them and they will last you years, I've had the same pair of boots now for over 10 years and they are still going strong.

Bean boots are definitely up there on my choices.

Muck seconded.

I have some Muck boots, and a pair of Sorels. The Mucks are easier to get in and out of. They're definitely more waterproof (no need to seal/wax them like the Sorels)

Neither are particularly excellent for driving a manual transmission

They're the "go to" boots here in Canada. Can't go wrong.

I got my sister a pair for Christmas last year. She loves them. Try 6pm.com I got a pretty good deal on "last years boots." I don't really think boots are meant to be in style so much that it matters if they were last year's.

I have no reason to get those (thanks CA) but I really want a pair. Beautiful things.

I would spend next years budget for boots and have a pair that would last that much longer. Get some Red Wings. The will become your go to pair of footwear once they are broken in. And, I have never seen better customer service.

Salomon boots are usually at the top level of comfort and car friendliness because they basically use a running shoe base with ankle bracing and Gore-Tex. So basically they're comfortable, flexible enough to drive in, sturdy enough to last a while, and have a breathable waterproof membrane outer that keeps you dry but prevents stinkfoot.

I have a pair of Sorels like the one pictured above. Extremely durable boot, and plenty warm when you're snow blowing ankle deep snow off your driveway in 15 F temps (yay Minnesota...). I try not to take them into really deep puddles, but I've never had a problem with water getting in from slush at the bottom of the driveway or melting snow.

I've got a pair of LaCrosse Alpha Icemans that are excellent. They might be overkill if you're mostly going to be indoors and it is warm enough that it is raining. When it is low single digits and howling wind while you are riding on a tractor snowblowing the driveway the do keep your feet nice and toasty though.

i live in L.A. and had to have a pair too...get the new sorel ankeny, i've been wearing them in the 100 degree summer heat and very thin sox...they are GREAT! very light, lighter than any boots i own, and as comfie as a shoe...do a lot of driving as i'm sure you do, and very easy on the pedal work, unlike most hiking boots...do yourself a favor, these are superb!
